PSHE and RSE

PSHE and RSE

A robust and modern PSHE and RSE programme has never been more important. The world in which our young people are growing up is ever-changing, including their access to technology, their experience of the online world, the evolving labour market, the changing political climate, and how young people navigate relationships. This cannot be underestimated.

At Bedford Modern School, our Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) programmes are designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to navigate life confidently and responsibly. We aim to provide a comprehensive and inclusive education that fosters personal growth, wellbeing, preparation for the future, and above all safeguards the young people in our care.

Aims of PSHE and RSE

  • To develop students’ understanding of themselves, their relationships with others, and their role in the wider community.
  • To provide students with essential life skills, including critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • To promote healthy and respectful relationships, emotional resilience, and understanding of our diverse world.
  • To prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of adulthood, including their health, wellbeing, and career aspirations.

PSHE and RSE at BMS are delivered by our dedicated tutors during tutorial lessons and extended tutorial sessions. These lessons create a safe, supportive space for students to explore important issues, ask questions, and engage in discussions that promote personal and social development. Additionally, we invite external speakers to deliver expert sessions on various topics, providing students with valuable insights and specialist knowledge that complement their learning and broaden their understanding of real-world issues.

We strongly believe that parents are the first educators of their children, and we value their role in shaping their children’s understanding of the world. To ensure a holistic approach, we encourage open communication and partnership with parents as we guide students through these critical life lessons. We also provide a supplementary seminar programme for parents to support the work we do with young people. Together, we support and empower our students as they grow and prepare for life beyond school.
