Sport

The purpose of sport at BMS is to inspire a generation of students to participate and represent the school in an outstanding sporting environment.

We have a very proud and successful sporting tradition and our aim is to ensure this continues in the future. Currently we have students representing Great Britain at Rowing and Water Polo, with many others involved in county, regional and academy set ups across our major team and club sports.

Sport and physical activities play an important part in school life and are vital in the development of our students.  We offer a variety of opportunities with staffing, resourcing and period allocation all reflecting the high priority given to sport and exercise within the School.

Throughout their time at BMS, our students have the opportunity to be involved in many different sports and clubs, regardless of ability. We currently offer more than 30 different physical activities, with more than 100 teams and 1000 fixtures during the year. There are regular tours for Rugby Union, Hockey, Football, Netball and Cricket along with training camps for Rowing. We also have an extensive House Programme which allows students to compete in more than 20 different sports.

The benefits of sport and physical activity are considerable and well documented. It is our aim to ensure that all students leave BMS with a desire to continue taking part in regular exercise in an activity or sport they have discovered in their time here.

Aims:

  • ENGAGE every student to participate in sport
  • ENCOURAGE our students to harness the life skills inherent in sport
  • INSPIRE our students to reach their full potential
  • CULTIVATE an outstanding coaching environment

The Faculty comprises 34 members of teaching, coaching and administrative staff across the departments of PE, Games & Sport. In addition the Faculty is supported by over 20 of the common room teaching staff. We have outstanding quality within our Sports Faculty with many teachers and coaches recognised at national level within their respective sport.

The strength of the team is at the heart of the success of the Faculty.  We believe in the importance of collaborative working and strive to maintain a strong foundation upon which colleagues can build their individual approaches to teaching and learning. The Sports Faculty oversees all sport at the school from Year 3 to Year 13.

"“The support system is fantastic and I’ve been able to successfully develop my own interest in rugby which I started in Year 4, outside of the academic timetable. The teachers are really approachable and encouraging, they motivate us to do the best we can in both team and individual sports.”" OBM Theo Cassell (2004-15)
