Music at Bedford Modern School is about more than performance. It is about belonging, expression and discovering potential. Whether a student is picking up an instrument for the first time, singing in a choir, composing their own music or performing to a packed audience, music provides a place where confidence grows, friendships form and talent flourishes.
A thriving musical community
Our philosophy is simple: music should be for everyone.
More than 375 students receive instrumental or vocal tuition from over 25 Visiting Music Teachers, while orchestras, choirs, bands and ensembles create opportunities for musicians of every ability to perform, collaborate and improve together. From the symphony orchestra and jazz band to chamber groups and student-led open mic nights, there is a place for every musical interest and ambition.
At BMS, excellence is not about who starts furthest ahead. It is about how far a student can grow.
A community of musicians
Music is woven throughout school life.
Rehearsal rooms are filled with energy, creativity and shared purpose. Younger musicians learn from older students, experienced performers support beginners and everyone contributes to something larger than themselves.
Our extensive programme of concerts, performances and community events gives students regular opportunities to share their work, whether in a formal concert setting or a more relaxed performance environment. Student-led groups thrive alongside established ensembles, creating a culture that celebrates both ambition and participation.
The result is a musical community that reflects the wider culture of BMS: supportive, aspirational and inclusive.
More than music
The impact of music extends far beyond the rehearsal room.
Students develop confidence, discipline, creativity and the ability to communicate with others. They learn how to listen, collaborate and contribute to a collective goal. They discover the rewards that come from commitment, practice and perseverance.
