Students are split into three groups based on their ability which is assessed in a swim test.
Throughout the Junior School emphasis is placed on specific techniques and actions that will allow continuity and improved performance. These include in Year Three long axis strokes (Front-crawl and backstroke), kick and body position. Breathing and Co-ordination principles are introduced in Year Four together with breaststroke.
In Year Five the improvement and development of the three main strokes is the main focus plus the introduction of butterfly with a focus on correct starts and turns. Finally In Year Six, pupils are encouraged to continue to develop and improve their techniques as well as put an emphasis on speed.
The more able pupils will have the opportunity in Years 4 – 6 to compete at School level and in the National Championships.
