At Bedford Modern Junior School, we believe that art plays a vital role in the curriculum. We aim to inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Pupils embark on a personal journey where they can develop and progress at their own rate. They are encouraged to develop their visual language, personal creativity and express their ideas and understanding both individually and collaboratively.
As well as learning technical skills and exploring ideas imaginatively art can also foster enhanced well-being and self-esteem.
Year 3 and 4
Lower KS2 – Pupils will be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. In Year 3 and 4 pupils begin to develop skills that will form the foundations for upper KS2.
- 2D: painting and drawing, printing and design
- 3D: Ceramics and Sculpture
- Firm foundations for future use
- Enjoyment of the subject
- Experience a variety of media
- Grow in understanding of different types of artistic practice
Year 5 and 6
Upper KS2 – pupils extend and develop skills previously experienced in Year 3 and 4. Pupils will be made aware of various links with artists and art movements. Projects undertaken last for differing lengths of time, depending on the nature of the task which include:
- Imaginative and observational drawing
- Pottery and printing
- Variety of sculptural ideas
- The correct use of tools is taught, as is the care of equipment.
Pupils achievements are celebrated throughout the school and frequently exhibited in the classroom and corridors. Some children may have work selected to appear in the school annual publication. There are also many extra- curricular opportunities and internal and external competitions in which to participate.
