Rowing
At BMS, we believe rowing should be available to everyone, which is why our families face no termly fee to row.
Whether your child is just learning to row, aiming for a university scholarship, or a place on the GB pathway, every member of our squad receives the same high level of support and encouragement. Our dedicated coaching team is committed to helping each rower develop their skills, build confidence, and enjoy being part of a welcoming, ambitious sport at Bedford Modern School.
Rowing is a Games option from Year 9, however there are opportunities to start rowing at BMS earlier by signing up to the Easter or Summer camps, which are open to all Senior School students. The Boat Club selects ‘A’ and ‘B’ racing crews from Year 10 and above; our younger squads are focused on learning the sport and building their understanding of rowing as a discipline.
Many students use their rowing experience and performances to gain either reduced offers or scholarships to universities both in the UK and abroad (e.g. USA). The BMS Boat Club holds good relationships with several US colleges where students have previously obtained full scholarships, including UCLA and Tulsa.
In recent years, the Boat Club have achieved many wins locally as well as achieving several ‘A’ final performances at the National Schools Regatta. BMS aims to qualify a crew into Henley Royal Regatta each year, and in more recent years the development of girls rowing has meant Henley Women’s Regatta is also a key event for the school.
A major event in the BMS rowing calendar is the annual training camp. More than 50 students travel to Italy every Easter to sharpen their skills before entering the major regatta season. Due to the timing of the camp, the students operate in a strict timetable balancing physical work and studying, which is supervised by members of the academic staff team. It is an exceptional opportunity for students to push themselves physically and academically in such an inspiring location, and it is an extremely popular trip.
Our notable OBMs include Olympic Gold medallist Tim Foster and Jess Read who represented Great Britain at the Junior World Championships. A further six more OBMs represented Great Britain at the Coupe de la Jeunesse European Championships. Currently, OBM Ellie Sillar is rowing at Cambridge University, where we proudly supported her in the University Boat Race.
