Tom’s Medical Essay Wins Scholarship 23 April 2021

On Wednesday 21 April, Headmaster Alex Tate announced Year 12 student Tom Piccolo as the winner of this year’s Robert Luff Medical Essay Scholarship.

The scholarship was established by the late OBM Robert Luff to support BMS students interested in Medicine as a career. Each year the Essay Competition is open to Year 12 students who are invited to submit an essay on a chosen topic.

Tom’s essay, entitled ‘What ethical issues must we consider when tackling childhood obesity?’, was chosen by OBM Dr Sarah Long from the five essays submitted this year. The scholarship offers a prize of £1,000 deducted from each of the two years of Sixth Form school fees.

Tom commented: “I am so pleased to have been awarded this year’s scholarship. I hope to study Medicine at Cambridge, and it will really help with my application.”

Dr Long added: “Tom’s essay was extremely well written, and he has clearly thought about the ethical principles extensively and made it his clear focus throughout. Congratulations and I wish him all the best with his future career.”
