Headmaster’s Blog 09 July 2019

As we hurtle towards the end of term, the pace hasn’t slowed down at all and there is still so much to enjoy before our final assembly on Friday morning. We celebrated artistic achievement last week at a wonderful evening event where we were reminded of some of the highlights from the past 12 months.  This week we recognise the successes of individuals and teams receiving sports awards and I am looking forward to what will be, I am sure, a very special occasion.

The weather was kind to us for our annual sports day last week in which everyone had a chance to show off their sporting prowess with Rose House lifting the winners’ trophy.  The Mile Challenge Relay was a particular highlight seeing Rose beat the record set by Tilden in 2006 by 0.8 seconds! Hannah Schlote in Year 10 broke the school record in the 300m and Year 8 student Sophie Tucker equalled the 100m record.  Tremendous achievements and very exciting to watch.

Our J15 8x+ crew ended their season in style on Saturday 29 June as they raced their way to gold at the Peterborough Junior Championships, despite the heat. They won the tough, all-Bedford final with less than a second to spare. Peterborough is a sculling-only regatta so it was all the more impressive as these Year 10 boys have been sweep rowing all year.

For those students who have recently taken their A Levels we look forward to seeing them on 15 August when they come back to School to pick up their results.  Before that they have their Leaver’s Ball to enjoy this week.  They have been a super year group and I wish them all the very best of luck with whatever they choose to do on the next stage of their journeys.

And finally, as our thoughts turn to a well-deserved summer break to recharge those batteries and spend some time with family and friends, I would like to take the opportunity to thank parents, former parents and OBMs for their support during the year as well as the students for their hard work and, importantly, the staff without whose dedication, commitment and good humour BMS wouldn’t be the remarkable place that it is.
