Headmaster’s Blog 18 July 2019

It is that time of the year when I have the pleasure of inviting the students who are joining us in September and their families to a number of informal information evenings so that everyone can learn a little more about life as part of the BMS community and what to expect in their first days and weeks here with us.  Last week it was the turn of those students in Years 7, 8 and 9 which made for a very busy evening indeed! I am delighted that interest in BMS has been so great that we have decided to add an additional class at Year 7 for September allowing more students to join us while keeping class sizes the same. I try to speak to as many people as I can during the course of the event, but I know that in the weeks and months ahead I will get to know many more whether that be in school, at sporting fixtures or at other events and it’s a prospect I look forward to enormously.  This week we welcome those joining us in Year 12 and I am interested to learn more about their ambitions and aspirations for life in the Sixth Form and beyond.

Last Thursday we hosted another successful careers event where a large number of guests, many of whom were OBMs, gave up their time freely to deliver sessions on a wide variety of topics ranging from medical and financial careers to writing CVs and university study. I am tremendously grateful to all of them for sharing their knowledge and expertise with our current Year 12 students who were joined by students from a number of other local schools for the occasion.

I often say that BMS is more than just a school, it is a community and that was never more evident than on Friday evening when 150 OBMs, their guests, and current and former staff joined us for this year’s annual Founder’s Dinner.  We celebrated the development of Sport at BMS and enjoyed speeches from former and current sports masters including George Cullen who, at 91, still commanded huge respect.

And I was delighted that the sun finally came out for last night’s House water sports tournament at Box End Park where staff and students got thoroughly soaked all in the spirit of healthy competition.  It was a fantastic event and clearly enjoyed by all.  Congratulations to Tilden who claimed victory although it’s still all to play for with just a little over three weeks left to go!
