Fast, Focused, and Future-Ready: BMS Students Impress in ‘F1 in Schools’ 02 March 2026
Our students continue to demonstrate innovation, teamwork and exceptional engineering talent through their involvement in F1 in Schools – the global STEM challenge that brings Formula One-inspired design and engineering into the classroom.
Through our weekly club, students have the opportunity to design, manufacture and race their own miniature F1-style cars, competing at regional and national events across the country. This hands-on experience is invaluable for any young person considering a future in engineering, design, or technical problem-solving, and we are incredibly proud to offer such an enriching programme.
Outstanding Results in the Senior Competition – 24 February
Our senior team delivered an exceptional performance at their competition on 24 February, achieving the fastest car in the Professional Class – and the fastest car across all classes. As the final team to race on the day, they quite literally blew the competition away.
Their achievements didn’t end there. The team also won the Sponsorship and Marketing Award, recognising their impressive ability to build professional industry links and promote their work.
With these strong results, the team secured 2nd place overall in the Professional Class and have proudly qualified for the National Finals on 24 March.
Taking part in the F1 in Schools Professional Class has given our Sixth Form students the chance to develop an impressive breadth of skills far beyond the typical school day – from mastering CAD and CFD software to applying advanced maths and engineering principles, many of which have strengthened their UCAS applications. They’ve also gained invaluable experience in the pitching and sales side of engineering: creating professional marketing materials, sponsorship proposals, and portfolios covering sustainability, branding, finance, and social media.
Although the project is now largely student-led, the team credits the strong foundation and continued support provided by staff since they first started in Year 8, helping them grow into confident, independent engineers. Highlights so far include the thrill of their first ever race and reaching the Year 10 National Finals in Leeds, both of which reinforced their passion and determination.
For many, the programme has shaped their future ambitions: Ollie now plans to study Maths, Louis is aiming for Mechanical Engineering, and Ed hopes to pursue General Engineering, with all three agreeing that the experience has solidified their passion for STEM and helped them greatly through the UCAS process. As the team celebrates their latest success and looks ahead to the National Finals, they are also proud to give back, with Ollie regularly supporting and mentoring the younger teams who are just beginning their own F1 in Schools journey.
Success at the East Midlands Regional Finals – 15 January
We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of our two younger teams, ACE Racing and Revolution Racing, who represented BMS brilliantly at the East Midlands Regional Finals.
Made up of students from Years 8–10, the teams embraced the challenge of designing and manufacturing their own racing cars, which they raced down a 20m track powered by compressed gas canisters. Alongside the racing, students produced detailed engineering and marketing portfolios and created professional pit displays to showcase their work.
Both teams presented to three separate judging panels, demonstrating their understanding of engineering principles, sustainability, team identity, and communication skills.
A special congratulations goes to ACE Racing, who were awarded Best Pit Display – a fantastic achievement that recognises creativity, attention to detail, and professionalism.
All students returned from the event inspired, motivated, and immensely proud of what they accomplished.
We are immensely proud of all our students involved in F1 in Schools.
Their hard work, creativity, and dedication continue to shine, and we look forward to supporting our senior team as they prepare for the National Finals.
