Celebrating Achievement 08 July 2019
On the evening of Thursday 04 July nearly 100 Junior School students were joined by their families, staff and special guests for the annual Junior School Prize-giving ceremony in the Christopher Fry Hall in which we recognise some of the fantastic work completed this year by our youngest students.
The awards, in the form of a book chosen by each recipient, cover a variety of topics from year group prizes for achievement and progress to citizenship. There are also six named trophies awarded for topics including sport and drama.
The Guest of Honour this year was OBM Tom Harbour who joined the Junior School in 1996. Tom was a very strong mathematician and chess player and in his final year at BMS returned to the Junior School as a Senior Monitor. After reading Natural Science at Cambridge, he trained through Teach First to teach Physics in a tough school before moving to Germany. Whilst teaching he completed a Masters in Education looking at how parents and schools can best work together to support their children. In February 2015 he founded Maths With Parents where he is currently the CEO.
Tom spoke fondly of his time at BMS and gave a motivational address to the prize-winners which included the importance of being altruistic and explained how, from the group of five friends that he grew up with at school, four of them now do jobs which didn’t even exist at the time.
"It was wonderful to welcome Tom back to BMS; he is a superb role model for our current students and I am very grateful to him for giving up his time to join us. “Everyone who received a prize this evening should be very proud of themselves and they richly deserve this acknowledgement of their efforts. However, every student in the Junior School should be equally proud of what they have personally achieved in the past year and we applaud every single one of them.”" Head of the Junior School, Mrs Rex
