Seth Secures Scholarship for Bali Volunteer Trip 27 April 2022

Year 12 student Seth Masih has been named as the winner of the 2022 Hill Family Scholarship, for which he receives £1,000 to undertake a volunteering trip in Bali, Indonesia this summer.

The Hill Family Scholarship is an annual award at Bedford Modern School, first presented in 2014. It was generously established by dual-qualified clinician and mechanical engineer OBM Dr Adam Hill (1993-98) and his family, with the aim of funding a BMS student (or students) as they plan and undertake a project to improve the health of disadvantaged children in an overseas country.

To be considered by the judging panel, Seth submitted a 1000-word essay detailing his reasons for applying, the specifics of the project he will be undertaking and how the experience will have an impact upon his future university and career plans.

Seth’s trip will see him travelling to a small town in the uplands of Bali which has suffered the economic fallout of a sharp decline in tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic. He plans to work with children in local schools to deliver fundamental health lessons on oral hygiene, general body cleanliness, nutrition and the avoidance of smoking.

He concluded this essay by writing: ‘I am excited to improve the lives of children by providing them with the knowledge on how to stay healthy, and I hope that you can give me this once-in-a-lifetime and invaluable opportunity to make an impact.’

Director of Sixth Form and member of the judging panel, Mr White, added: “Seth is a deserving winner of this award, and the judging panel were very impressed by his essay. His commitment to his project is already clear; he began learning Indonesian in January, and he has already secured some donations of toothbrushes and toothpaste for the children from a local Bedford dental practice.

“Our thanks go to Adam, who is one of our most eminent OBMs, for his continued support of the School in various different forms.”
