On Saturday 19 June, Year 12 athlete Alex Alston won the U20 3000m Steeplechase at the England Athletics U20 Track and Field Championships. His time of 9:16 broke the Bedford and County Athletic Club record, which was set by Alex’s running coach in 1981.
The event took place at Bedford International Stadium after a one-year break due to the pandemic, and involved participants from across the country who competed in a variety of track and field events.
Alex commented: “This is the first time I’d attempted the race as I usually compete in the 2000m Steeplechase or 1500m flat. I was also the youngest in the race so feel really pleased to have won and I’m especially delighted to have broken my own coach’s record which has stood at the Club for 40 years.”
Alex will now go on to compete in the English Schools Championships on 09 July.
