Excelling together

The largest co-educational academically selective day school in Bedfordshire, Bedford Modern School welcomes students aged 7-18

Where excellence thrives

At Bedford Modern School, academic excellence is matched by exceptional pastoral care, outstanding opportunities and a strong sense of community, creating an environment where every student is known, valued and empowered to excel.

We nurture potential and improve lives through a culture of ambition, belonging and shared success. Young people are encouraged to aim high, support one another and discover what they are capable of. Here, excellence is never pursued alone; it is built together through ambition, character and values.

For over 250 years, we've been nurturing potential and improving lives through education. Today, that purpose continues to shape everything we do.

The Headmaster of Bedford Modern School

Welcome from the Headmaster

Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions a family will make.

At Bedford Modern School, we believe that education has the power to transform lives. For more than 250 years, we have helped young people discover their strengths, fulfil their potential and develop the confidence to make a positive contribution to the world around them.

We are proud of our reputation as one of the region’s leading academic schools. Learning matters here. Curiosity is encouraged, challenge is embraced and students are inspired to aim high. Our excellent academic outcomes are the result of a culture that values hard work, intellectual ambition and a genuine love of learning.

What makes BMS distinctive, however, is the way academic success is combined with opportunity, character and community. Our students are encouraged not only to achieve highly, but also to perform, compete, lead, create and contribute. They discover talents they never knew they had and develop the resilience, confidence and integrity that will serve them throughout their lives.

Perhaps our students describe the School best:

“We all want the best for each other.”

That spirit of shared ambition runs through everything we do. It creates a culture where students are challenged to excel, supported to succeed and encouraged to enjoy the journey.

We are proud of what our students achieve. More importantly, we are proud of who they become.

I hope our website gives you a sense of what makes Bedford Modern School such a special place. Better still, I hope you will come and experience it for yourself.

Bedford Modern School

Our aims and values

Nurturing potential.
Improving lives.

Bedford Modern School was founded on a simple but powerful belief: that education can change lives.

Since 1764, we have served our community by helping young people discover and fulfil their potential. Today, that purpose remains at the heart of everything we do.

As an academically selective School, we believe intellectual ambition should be celebrated. We encourage students to think deeply, ask questions, challenge ideas and develop the confidence to form their own opinions. Academic excellence is part of our DNA, but we believe education is about more than what young people know.

It is about who they become.

A Modern education with purpose

Our mission is to provide a truly modern, inclusive and relevant education, delivering excellence in every aspect of school life. Through our aims to Inspire, Engage, Encourage and Cultivate, we create an environment where students are challenged, supported and empowered to thrive.

The culture that emerges from this is shaped by the values we share:

Kindness

in how we support one another.

Respect

for different backgrounds, perspectives and experiences.

Resilience

in the face of challenge and uncertainty.

Confidence

to think independently and embrace opportunity.

Ambition

for ourselves and for others.

Responsibility

for our actions and their impact.

Integrity

in everything we do.

These values are not aspirations written on a wall. They are visible in classrooms, rehearsals, matches, performances, leadership opportunities and everyday interactions. They shape the relationships students build, the choices they make and the way they contribute to the wider community.

The result is a School where achievement is celebrated but never pursued at the expense of the whole child. A school where students are encouraged to work hard, support one another and discover what fulfilled ambition looks and feels like.

This spirit can be seen in outstanding academic outcomes, nationally recognised achievements in sport and the arts, meaningful leadership opportunities and the confidence students develop throughout their time here.

Ultimately, our purpose is not simply to prepare young people for examinations. It is to nurture potential, improve lives through education and help every student leave BMS as a capable, compassionate and confident individual, ready to thrive in the world beyond school.

Co-education with the confidence of experience

For more than twenty years, Bedford Modern School has educated girls and boys together, not as a transition or an initiative, but as an established part of who we are. That experience has created a culture where students learn alongside one another, challenge one another and succeed together.

Because great co-education is about more than sharing classrooms. It is about helping young people develop confidence, build relationships and learn from different perspectives. It is about preparing them for the world beyond school by immersing them in it every day.

Today, our community is close to an even balance of girls and boys. That matters because it creates a learning environment that feels natural, representative and reflective of modern society. Students are not part of a school adapting to co-education. They are part of a community where co-education is fully embedded in everyday life.

You see it in lessons, on stage, in sports teams and in leadership roles. Students are not being prepared for a future world; they are already learning within one.

Recognised in the Independent School of the Year Awards for our co-educational provision, BMS offers something more than balance. It offers belonging.

The result is a community of confident, academically ambitious and socially aware young people, ready to thrive in the wider world.

Academic results

Our students consistently achieve outstanding academic results, supported by expert teaching, individual guidance and a culture that encourages every learner to reach their full potential.
