Headmaster’s Welcome

Headmaster’s Welcome

Welcome to Bedford Modern School, in many ways a unique independent day school, which provides an unpretentious environment allowing boys and girls aged 7 – 18 to reach their full potential whatever their strengths.

We are unashamedly demanding in our academic standards and our results at A Level and GCSE are consistently excellent.  Our curriculum is planned from age seven through to 18 and is extremely flexible, allowing the typical student personal and academic breadth covering both traditional subjects with more recent and credible additions.  In the Junior School, the form teacher leads the majority of the teaching ensuring the children are properly nurtured.

Our priority is the welfare of our students and a focus on care for them as individuals lies at the very heart of all that we do.  The boys and girls work well together and gain much from sharing different perspectives and approaches to learning as well as developing life skills.  The busy school environment encourages students to be fully involved in all activities and we have a national reputation for excellence in the performing arts and have been national champions in several different sports. Students here are happy and have a strong sense of purpose which is evident as soon as you walk through the door.  Please do take the opportunity to visit us and experience this for yourself.

Our Common Rooms (from Year 7 upwards) give a unique feel to our day school and provide a warm environment in which to make friends.  The relationship with the family is crucial and we seek to develop and nurture a partnership with home creating a sense of mutual respect between parents, students and staff.  The School is central to its local community offering resources, facilities, time and expertise where it is needed most. We also benefit from being part of The Harpur Trust with its long established place within the town.

We are committed to broadening access through our bursary scheme and enhancing our multi-cultural and socially mixed community, and, as such, we learn to respect and support one another.  We value the quality of our continued relationship with our alumni and this investment in the wider BMS community is invariably repaid by the generosity of OBMs when they are invited to support our current students.

Alongside the current range of diverse facilities, which complement the progressive and specialist teaching staff, we aim to provide the best possible environment in which our students will thrive. This year we opened our multi-million pound Science Centre which is by far the most significant capital investment in the school’s history.  However, our fee strategy is highly competitive, balancing the most cost effective operation whilst optimising educational provision.

We are fiercely proud of our 250-year history but our 21st Century co-educational provision ensures that students are fully prepared for the modern world.
