Sixth DT

Design and Technology

The department offers the choice of Product Design or Design Engineering at A Level.  The OCR specification (H404 and H406) allows the students to further develop their skills and key knowledge gained from their GCSE Design and Technology studies.

Although the structure of the course is similar to that of the GCSE, the focus of the work is different providing the students with an opportunity to acquire a greater depth of understanding in the subject.

The coursework module encourages the students to look more closely at the technology which is an integral part of today’s society and to question its uses and future development.  Students are required to design and prototype a product from a design need that they have identified.  The students will work with stakeholders throughout the project, making sure that they are involved fully in the iterative design process.

The examined modules look to further extend students’ knowledge and expertise in key areas of the subject.  Students will need to identify design features and functions of other products and have a clear understanding of materials and industrial manufacturing processes.

Students work on mini project tasks through year 1 of the course, building up their knowledge and understanding of key topics and areas of the coursework for the year 2 course.
