Case Study - Year 13 Boy

Johnny Luk is in Year 13 having joined BMS in Year 7.

"One of the decisive factors in selecting BMS was that it was going to become co-educational", said Johnny.

"There are lots of opportunities at BMS, probably more than other day schools", he said.  "I was quite shy when I joined, but the School gives plenty of leadership opportunities.  This had changed my perspective and made me more confident, more articulate and has been character building".

With 10 GCSEs, Johnny is studying Geography, Physics and Biology A Levels.  "I am considering Durham, York or Bath University and intend to study Biology with a view to becoming a Biologist or possibly undertaking a Masters Management", he said.

Johnny is a member of the BMS Rowing Team and the former Captain of Boats.  "I have implemented a newsletter for BMS rowers and helped design the rowing website.  Part of the Captain's role involved making rowing speeches in Assembly and coaching younger students", he said.  Johnny is also a Year 7 Senior Monitor encompassing the pastoral well-being of younger students.

He believes the small class sizes in the Sixth Form are an asset and that the facilities are excellent, especially the newly refurbished Boathouse and the Library. "When I was in Year 11, I would see Sixth Form students entering the Rutherford Building and it was something to aspire to".

Describing life in the Sixth Form as busy, friendly and relaxed, Johnny believes students should be open-minded.  "To take full advantage of the Sixth Form, students need to take part in lots of extra curricular activities.  Year 12 students should look at the Year 13 as they will soon be in that year group themselves", he said.
