Our vision

Bedford Modern School is in many ways a unique school - an independent school which is free of pretentiousness, producing students with a vigorous intellectual and enthusiastic involvement in the equally demanding challenges of a busy school environment. We are committed to the development of the whole person by rigorously pursuing a well-rounded education.

The happy child is likely to be the most fulfilled, and we want students above all to enjoy their time with us. Learning itself should be challenging and stimulating - not just hoops to be jumped. We are unashamedly demanding in our academic standards.  Our curriculum is planned from age 7 through to age 18 and is extremely flexible, allowing the typical student personal and academic breadth.

Traditional subjects rub shoulders with more recent additions. For example, we are a centre of excellence for both science and languages, whilst performing arts has an outstanding local and national reputation. We seriously value the individual and their choices rather than shunting them down pre-ordained routes. There is no BMS 'clone'.

Pastoral care of the individual is therefore at the heart of what we are as a school.  Our common rooms ( from Year 7 upwards) give an almost unique feel to our day school and provide a warm environment to make friends. The relationship with the family is crucial and it is this triangle of respect which we seek to develop and nurture: school to student to family.

The School is a multi-cultural and socially mixed community, and, as such, we learn to respect and build up one another. Friendships which develop are long-lasting and relationships between staff and students are warm and natural.
