Head of Faculty - John Mower
Head of Music Technology - David Shoukry
The Music Faculty incorporates the Music and Music Technology Departments, and caters for academic music teaching in addition to providing instrumental lessons for around 450 students. Our curriculum is designed to allow smooth progression from the Junior School through to the end of the Sixth Form and the various staff work in partnership with the Head of Faculty to ensure that the curriculum meets our aims.
There are four full-time and two part-time Music staff as well as 29 Visiting Music Teachers, many of whom play professionally in London Orchestras and West End shows. We have excellent, modern accommodation including three classrooms, 13 practice rooms and two fully-equipped music technology and recording studios. In addition to providing classroom music lessons we offer Edexcel GCSE, AQA AS/A2 Music and the more specialised AS/A2 in Music Technology. Our schemes of work are closely based on the National Curriculum, allowing students the opportunity to explore music in a progressive atmosphere with access to traditional instruments and resources, as well as electronic instruments and music technology equipment.
We excel in extra-curricular music: students of all abilities and interests are catered for with organised activities running every lunch time and sometimes after school. These include a symphony orchestra, string orchestra, choirs, concert band, dance band and various chamber groups for string, wind and brass players. We encourage and promote student-led groups and there is a thriving after-school band scene at BMS.
Our concert schedule is extensive and varied both in school and in the wider community - these showcase both our very best students and give less experienced players the opportunity to take part in more relaxed events. Recent highlights have included a Choral Concert of Mozart's Requiem, an Orchestral Concert performing works from the standard repertoire and the musicals We Will Rock You and Oliver!. BMS ensembles are in demand at many events around the county.
