Art

The aim of the Art department is to stimulate and intellectually engage all students from Year's 7 to 13 in the subject of art. We do this through practical application in the form of painting, printing and sculpting and we encourage the exploration of other artists work and the development of an individual's ideas.

We give each pupil in Year's 7-9 a broad experience of art skills and
practices. All students will work within the following areas: Painting and Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture and Art History. Year 9 sees students participating in a study day off campus where they make individual work based on their experiences on that day and the work is exhibited in school later in the year.

At GCSE level we aim to build on the broad skills delivered previously and follow the Unendorsed Edexcel GCSE course. In the GCSE moderator's report, Edexcel commented on the department's consistent command of art skills in painting, printmaking and sculpture and felt that 'particularly effective were the prints with their subtle yet effective use of colour and good examples of engaging 3D work relating to wider social themes.' (GCSE mod. report June 2005)

At A Level students are encouraged to develop their own ideas and
styles. Each year, we regularly have approx 5 students successfully
applying for Art foundation courses and 5 or 6 students who opt for
architecture and design based courses. In the A2 examinations of June 2005, 'two' of our Year 13 students were in the top ten candidates in their A level Art exam, nationally and recognised by Edexcel for outstanding performance in their subject.
