Faculty of English
Head of Faculty - S. Bywater
Head of Film Studies - J. J. Sanders
Head of A Level English Literature - Ms J. Chumbley
The English Faculty comprises English Language and Literature, Film and Media Studies. Each subject has its own individual identity and scheme of work or syllabus to follow. The subjects naturally complement one another and, with the creation of the English Faculty, cross-fertilisation is encouraged when relevant within the classroom and in Faculty meetings.
All four areas help pupils to develop their critical and academic skills, to organize their own thoughts and ideas, and to communicate them with clarity and precision. Pupils learn to reason objectively, to understand the significance of context, and to respond to the world imaginatively and creatively. We therefore provide a positive and pleasant environment that promotes critical analysis, discussion and the consideration of the views of others through the use of texts, class debate, and audio and visual material.
Our English curriculum, which is available on our intranet site, links in with the Junior School's and carries the pupils forward into the Sixth Form and beyond. We aim to provide learning skills which will allow our pupils to work independently, and co-operatively when required. The Faculty monitors pupils closely throughout their time at the school in order to give each one a realistic objective and to ensure progress is maintained.
Each subject is lead by a highly qualified and enthusiastic specialist who is in control of curriculum matters within their own subject area. The Heads of Subject work in partnership with the Head of Faculty.
