Headmaster's Blog week ending 8th July

The last week of term is finally upon us and the School bids farewell to six members of the teaching staff, Geoff Lavery, Nick Yelland, Michael Harrington, Monica Hetherington, Jane Thomas and Maureen Baker, who retire at the end of the academic year.  On behalf of Bedford Modern School I would like to pay tribute to each of their individual contributions and wish them every happiness in their retirement.

A cheque for money raised by pupils to provide a sensory garden for the stroke unit at Bedford Hospital will be presented at an Assembly on Monday whilst later that day our Sports Day activities take place during the afternoon at Newnham Athletic Track where the House Trophy will be decided.

I am looking forward to Thursday's Artistic Achievement Awards Evening with guest speaker, actor, director, playwright and author Stephen Berkoff.  One of Berkoff's many stage adaptations is "The Trial" that was performed by our Year 13 Theatre Company, Theatre in Transit, last year.

Thursday is also the day that our World Challenge Teams leave for China and although their trip will be demanding it will undoubtedly provide invaluable experience in terms of leadership and self confidence.

Friday sees the end of the Summer Term and another academic year.  Our OBM Founder's Day Dinner takes place in the Refectory on Friday evening with the six retiring members of staff invited as guests of the OBM Club.

In addition to the World Challenge Expedition, a wide variety of School tours and trips are taking place during the summer holidays including La Fosca Adventure Holiday to France; CCF Camp to Barry Buddon, Scotland; Schools' Shooting Meeting at Bisley, Surrey; U13 Cricket Tour to Dublin; Rugby Tour to South Africa and a Hockey Tour to Eastbourne.

All that remains now is for me to wish you all a well deserved summer break and I look forward to seeing you all again refreshed for the new challenges that lie ahead in the Autumn Term and beyond.
