Headmaster Blog week ending 4 November

I hope the half-term break has provided everyone to draw breath, spend time with family and friends and enjoy some 'down-time' before we immerse ourselves in what is set to be an intense and event-filled second half of term.

With the nights drawing in and a chill in the air, I find it hard to believe that I will have been here at BMS for two years in January.  Where has that time gone?  So many things have happened at the School since that time and, as is often said, 'to stand still is to go backwards' and I can assure you that is something I will never allow to happen at BMS.

We are 'on track' with the right Formula this week with representatives from Red Bull, Mclaren, Williams, Lotus and Mercedes attending the Formula Student Event on Tuesday 1 November.  The IMechE Automobile Division is proud to be returning to BMS with their Formula Student Event and this is an exciting opportunity involving industry, universities and schools for GCSE and A Level students to learn more about the exciting opportunities involved in studying Engineering.

Tickets are selling fast for Theatre in Transit, our Year 13 Theatre Company's production of Macbeth that runs between Thursday 3 and Saturday 5 November.  Rehearsals have taken place over the last few weeks and this is one production I am very much looking forward to seeing.

A warm welcome to all the senior citizens visiting Bedford Modern School on Friday 4 November for the 'drop in' session.  This is an informal occasion for local senior citizens to 'drop in' for a social visit and enjoy a relaxing cup of tea and refreshments with our Sixth Formers.

Don't forget, if you have any family or friends considering BMS, please suggest they come along to our whole School Open Day on Saturday 12 November.  There's a morning or afternoon session to choose from and, for our younger visitors, there's a creche, face-painter and treasure trail in the Junior School.

Good luck to all our girls and boys participating in sports fixtures over the coming week including the Netball U16 County Tournament; the Girls' Hockey U11 IAPS Tournament; the Girls' Hockey U16 Indoor County Tournament, Rugby and the Rowing Fours Head.

Finally, I would like to make special mention of five pupils who have excelled in different areas. Congratulations to Year 11 pupil Pierre-Marcel Yamfam who has been chosen to represent the Independent Schools' Football Association South of England U16 side.  This is a great achievement for Pierre-Marcel and I wish him every success.

Congratulations also to Year 10 pupil Rob Baxter who has been chosen to attend the U15 England High Performance Hockey Academy with a view to being selected for next year's England U16 Hockey Team.

Also on the subject of Hockey, well done to Year 12 pupil Scott Marsh who secured a place in the JRPC Tier 1 cluster tournament, scoring twice and performing very well, just missing out on progression to the High Performance Academy Coaching - effectively England.

Alexandra Hall, in Year 13, also deserves a special mention as she is the winner of The Glenys Lee Memorial Prize for Creative Writing in the Sixth Form.  Well done to Alexandra and thanks to Old Bedford Modernian Adrian Lee for endowing this prize.

Year 12 pupil Raeshan Downer is to be congratulated on being selected for the U18 National Handball Longlist Squad.  Raeshan will train at the European Training Camp in Germany with the intention of playing for England in the final squad in the European Tournament in Austria in March 2012.

Enjoy the week and for those attending bonfire or fireworks displays at the weekend, have an enjoyable time.
