Headmaster Blog week ending 21st January

I would like to begin by mentioning the Examination League Tables that have featured in the local and national press recently.  BMS pupils up to Sixth Form study the Maths International GCSE (IGCSE) examination which, currently, the Government does not recognise in its league tables.  We are in good company however as top schools such as Manchester Grammar School enter their pupils for this examination.

The result of this is that some other schools are ranked above BMS in terms of pupils having achieved five GCSEs including Grades A* to C in English and Maths.  May I stress that this is only because the IGCSE qualification has not been taken into account.  If this had been the case, Bedford Modern School would certainly have appeared in the top portion with 99% of pupils gaining at least five A* to C grades.

I would like to congratulate the five Bedford Modern School students who have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

The School is also proud to have obtained three medals in the Institute of Physics Olympiad.  Year 13 student, Ian Orton, was awarded a Gold Medal, being one of the top 50 students in the country and fellow students, Callum Mackay and Josh Maxey were both awarded Bronze Medals.

Activity Days / Assessments for September entry are continuing apace this week, together with the second of our Year 8 Parents' Evenings.

I am very much looking forward to attending the Parents' Association Burns Supper and Ceilidh on Saturday evening.  I would encourage anyone who hasn't already booked, to purchase a ticket and support this event; further details are on our website.

Finally, good luck to all BMS teams competing in this weekend's Hockey, Netball and Football fixtures; I hope to see many of you there on Saturday.
