Headmaster Blog week ending 18 November

For anyone unable to attend our Open Day on Saturday 12 November, there's another chance to visit BMS at the School Action Day on Monday 14 November.  This is an ideal time to see the School on a normal working day with the opportunity for a guided tour at 9.00am, 10.00am or 2.30pm and a chance to meet members of the teaching staff.

I am delighted, once again, that Bedford Modern School is hosting Bedford's Battle of the Bard.  May I extend a warm welcome to pupils and staff from all the schools across the county who will be visiting and performing abridged versions of Shakespeare's best known works.  Performances take place in the Howard Hall at BMS at 7.00pm on Monday 14, Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 November.

On Tuesday 15 November, our Year 5 pupils travel to the ThinkTank, Birmingham Science Museum at Millennium Point, discovering more about the world around them and supplementing their curriculum studies in Science.

Prospective Year 3 pupils will participate in a Taster Day in the Junior School on Wednesday 16 November, whilst Sixth Form Taster Days continue on Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 November.

I am looking forward to the Junior School Concert in the Howard Hall on Friday 18 November.  This year's Concert sees the largest pupil participation ever with 120 children and features three choirs including the newly formed Year 6 Singing Group.  Please do come along and support some of our youngest members of the School and enjoy up-beat classics such as 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah', 'Consider Yourself' and 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'.

Bedford Modern School always seeks to serve the local community in the best way it can and one event the School regularly  hosts is 'Drop In' sessions for senior citizens.  Our next 'Drop In' session takes place during the afternoon of Friday 18 November in the Rutherford Building and we look forward to welcoming our guests.

Pupils and staff will also participate in a Mufti Day on Friday 18 November in support of Children in Need.

Year 9 new entrants to the School's Combined Cadet Force go on their first field night training at Yardley Chase on Friday.  The exercise is designed and delivered by the senior cadets in the Royal Marine & Army sections and includes a night exercise, stalking, camouflage, navigation and other basic military skills.  This will be hugely beneficial to the young cadets as they learn important life skills such as how to look after themselves, cook and be a team member under strenuous conditions.

Sports-wise, this is another busy week bursting with girls' and boys' sporting fixtures including Netball U14 County Tournament, Rugby, Hockey and Boys' Water Polo.

Finally, congratulations to Year 8 pupil Claudia Johnson who has been selected for a place in the England National U14 Rounders Squad.  Find out more about Claudia's success at http://bedmod.co.uk/en/England National Rounders

Enjoy your week.
