I have just returned from the annual Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference where one of the keynote speakers was Professor A.C. Grayling, Master of the New College of the Humanities, and a Fellow of St. Anne's College, Oxford. We were therefore very privileged indeed that on Friday 7 October, Professor Grayling visited BMS and spoke to our Year 11, 12 and 13 Humanities students.
Learning history has never been so "horrible" for our Year 4 pupils who have a Horrible Histories Trip in store on Monday 10 October at Bloomsbury Theatre, London to see the 'Rotten Romans'.
On Monday evening I look forward to welcoming potential students to our Sixth Form Open Evening. If you are considering joining our Sixth Form in September 2012, please come along and find out how you could be part of our team and be inspired to try new things.
On Wednesday 12 October, Year 4 pupils participate in a Roman Day Discovery Trip to Milton Keynes, whilst on Thursday our Year 3 children will travel to the Bloomsbury Theatre to learn about the 'Awful Egyptians' as part of the Horrible Histories programme presenting facts in a fun and entertaining way.
20 students, representing five countries from Years 10 to 13 will participate at a Model United Nations on Saturday 15 October at Bedford Girls' School where they will work in Committees on Political, Economic, Social and Environmental concerns producing resolutions to be debated.
Again, a number of sporting activities takes place including girls' hockey, boys' water polo, golf and equestrian fixtures and I wish all our boys and girls competing the very best of luck.
I am sure that everyone will agree that travel broadens the mind and there are two sports tours taking place over the half-term break. Our Year 8 and 9 girls' will enjoy a Hockey Tour to Germany whilst on Sunday 16 October our U15 Rugby Tour to Italy departs. The squad will play Petrarca Padova, Piazzola Rugby Club and also Valsugana Padova Rugby Club whilst also having an opportunity to visit Venice, the famous Murano glass factories, the Rialto and St. Mark's Basilica.
21 of our Sixth Form Geography students are travelling to Iceland over half-term for what promises to be a truly spectacular field trip. The students will be looking at the legacy of glaciations and vulcanicity at The Blue Lagoon (geothermal spring); Westmann Islands (Eidfell volcano); South Coast (Seljulandfoss waterfall and Solheimujokull glacier); Mid Atlantic Ridge, Hellisheim geothermal plant and Reykjavick.
Finally, I was inspired to hear that Year 13 student Rebecca Darnell is swimming the equivalent of the English Channel, involving in excess of 1,300 lengths in her local swimming pool, over a number of weeks for The Aspire Charity. Remember what Mother Teresa said: "To truly give charity, you must be free of selfishness" and I wish Rebecca the best of luck.
Have a restful and enjoyable half-term when it arrives and I look forward to seeing everyone back at School on Monday 31 October.
