Drama.
Head of Subject: Mr Jason Riddington-Smith
Drama is taught to all years of the school becoming an option in Year 9. In Years 7 and 8 all students have two or three Drama lessons per cycle. During the course students study a number of different disciplines including - Commedia dell'arte, Masks and Mime, Scripted Performance and Dance Drama.
At least one theatre trip is organised for each year group per school year, allowing students to see a professional West End show. Recent trips include Sister Act, Wicked and Warhorse.
When students opt for Drama in Year 9, the course aims to build on the practical dramatic skills and concepts introduced in Years 7 and 8. A written component is introduced and students focus on two areas of study: Response to Live Theatre and the study of a set text.
GCSE
A large number of students opt for GCSE Drama, which is taught in small groups. This popular course has both written and practical assessments. All students undertake three practical projects. Options include:
Devised Thematic Work
Scripted Performance
Dance Drama
Lighting Design
Stage Design
The Written examination is based on the study of a set play and a response to live theatre.
The department organises a number of theatre trips over the two year course, both locally and in the West End. Recently students have had the opportunity to see productions such as The History Boys and 1984.
