May I take this opportunity to welcome you to our new website that will introduce you to all that Bedford Modern School has to offer – both to our students and their parents, as well as the community around us.
Bedford Modern School is in many ways a unique independent school - an unpretentious environment for boys and girls aged 7 – 18. We are a very open community, where focus on the individual pervades the ethos.
The boys and girls work well together and gain much from sharing different perspectives and approaches to learning and developing life skills. We produce pupils with a vigorous intellectual and enthusiastic involvement in a busy school environment. The School has a national reputation for excellence in the performing arts, as well as being current and past national champions in several different sports.
The pupils are happy here – happy because there is a common sense of being involved, supported and successful. The happy child is likely to be the most fulfilled, and we want pupils above all to enjoy their time with us. Learning itself should be challenging and stimulating. We are unashamedly demanding in our academic standards; expecting to add value in all that we do. Our curriculum is planned from age 7 through to age 18 and is extremely flexible, allowing the typical pupil personal and academic breadth: to be able to study traditional subjects with more recent and credible additions.
Pastoral care of the individual is at the heart of what we are as a School. Our Common Rooms (from Year 7 upwards) give a unique feel to our day school and provide a warm environment to make friends. The relationship with the family is crucial and it is this triangle of respect which we seek to develop and nurture: school-pupil-family. The School is central and committed to its local community: offering resources, facilities, time and expertise where it is needed most.
The School is committed to broadening access through our Bursary Scheme and enhancing our multi-cultural and socially mixed community, and, as such, we learn to respect and support one another. We value the quality of our continued relationship with our alumni and this investment in our wider community is invariably repaid by the generosity of OBMs when they are invited to support our current students. Friendships which develop are long-lasting and relationships between staff and pupils are warm and natural. With a 250 year history, our 21st Century co-educational provision ensures that pupils are fully prepared for the modern world.
The School boasts an impressive and diverse range of facilities to complement the progressive and specialist teaching staff. With a total of 1200 pupils, a thriving Junior School and dynamic and successful Sixth Form, the School finds itself in a strong position. That said, the School must develop and evolve; capital development, sensitive to all in harmony with the environment is imperative for our future success. Our fee strategy is competitive, balancing the most cost effective operation whilst optimising the educational provision. We have a clear ten year Vision, which we aim to achieve through our
Mission supported by the Strategic Objectives and underlying Undertakings of the Operational Plan for the next five years.
