Faculty of Languages.

Head of Faculty:  Mr Graham Watkins

The Faculty at BMS comprises of:

French.
German.
Spanish.
Latin
Classical Civilisation.

In grouping Latin with the Modern Languages we recognise the role it has had in shaping the tongues of Europe today and in Classical Civilisation students begin to appreciate the influence of the ancient world on the societies where the Modern Languages we learn are spoken. The Faculty has exceptional
Language Resources.

Years 7 - 9

In Year 7 all students are given a taste of French, German and Spanish which allows them to make an informed choice as to which two Modern Foreign Languages they wish to continue in Year 8. All students are taught Latin in Year 8. In Year 9 students continue with one or both of the Modern Languages from Year 8 and they may also choose to continue with Latin.

GCSE

All students are normally expected to take at least one Modern Foreign Language to GCSE through Years 10 and 11, some take two. GCSE courses in Latin and Classical Civilisation are two further options in these years. The Modern Languages and Classical Civilisation follow the AQA GCSE specification, Latin the WJEC.

A Level

All Languages Faculty subjects offer AS and A Level qualifications in the Sixth Form. The modern languages follow the AQA specification with an emphasis placed on a balanced and consistent development of the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Latin follows the OCR specification and Classical Civilisation the AQA. Languages Faculty subjects in the Sixth Form combine well with almost all the other subjects on offer at BMS and are looked on very favourably when applying for courses in higher education, whatever they may be. The study of Classics and Modern Foreign Languages in the Sixth Form will not only stretch the ablest students but will also give all language enthusiasts a stimulating, enjoyable and relevant experience.
