Latin.

Head of Faculty:  Mr Graham Watkins
Head of Subject:  Miss Jo Newton

A
small number of students every year takes Latin to AS and A level. Our results have been outstanding, with all students in the past three years achieving an A grade at A level. We follow the OCR specification, which involves both language work and literature. Students are expected to extend their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar so that they can translate passages by major authors such as Caesar and Ovid by the end of the course. In literature, recent set texts have included Cicero’s speech against Catiline, Book 1 of Virgil’s Aeneid and Livy’s account of Hannibal’s campaign in Italy from Book 23 of his History.

For students interested in studying Classics at university, we offer Greek as an extra-curricular option. In recent years, our students have gone on to study Latin or Classics at UCL, Nottingham and Bristol. Former students are now working in areas such as law, finance and management.
