Chemistry.

In the Chemistry department, we pride ourselves in being one of the most popular subject choices at AS and A2 level. Our students know that they are opting for a subject which offers intellectual challenges and equips them with a range of desirable skills, opening up many options at University. Students are taught by experienced, creative and inspiring teachers who aim to make the Sixth Form Chemistry experience as enjoyable and enriching as possible.
We follow the OCR course which, as well as giving students a good grounding in the fundamentals of the subject, affords them practical experience and the opportunity to develop their laboratory skills. The course also encourages students to extend their appreciation of ‘How Science Works’ and to recognise the importance of Chemistry in the world beyond the classroom. Students sit two examinations at AS – ‘Atoms, Bonds and Groups’ and ‘Chains, Energy and Resources’.
At A2, students sit a further two examinations – ‘Rings, Polymers and Analysis’ and ‘Equilibria, Energetics and Elements’. In both years the practical, internally assessed coursework comprises 20% of the year’s work.
