Miriam Keaveny, a Year 12 student, has been chosen for Amnesty International's Advisory Group.

16 year old Miriam was one of over 50 applicants for only 20 places.  Miriam's successful application was judged on why she considered herself suitable for the Advisory Group, why she supported Amnesty International, which events she had participated in and her idea to make Amnesty International more attractive to young people.

"Amnesty International is an organisation I have always admired", said Miriam.  "Human rights are obviously important and I fundamentally believe that no-one has a right to stop anyone from saying, being or doing what they want to do," added Miriam.

Miriam, who is also President of Bedford Modern School's Amnesty International Society, is planning a school mufti day and also participation in Amnesty International's "Write for Rights" day on 9 December.

As part of Amnesty International's Advisory Group, Miriam will be involved in meetings several times a year at Amnesty International's Human Rights Action Centre in London where she will be able to meet and discuss ideas with like-minded people.

"I was delighted to be chosen to join the Advisory Group and want to help raise awareness of the charity and make it easier for young people to get involved.

"As a young person it is easy to feel that you have no power but our generation will be the next generation of decision makers," said Miriam.
